COMPLACENCY- I liken complacency to treading water1 mile off of shore and being content & happy about it. You aren't moving toward shore (which is your goal) but actually by deciding to take no action you're moving farther away from your goal. You're exhausting energy on moving nowhere and staying in the same spot. Worst of all if you waste enough time delaying taking action you are exhausting so much energy you'll never be able to reach your goal simply because you're going to be too exhausted to push through the struggle to shore. Eventually you will become exhausted, start to sink below the water, start swallowing water, and eventually sink so far below you will never surface again and will inevitably drown.
For me personally complacency has been a killer. I have run into it in the past in careers with no upward potential, no challenge, no fun, and not my life's ambition. The lack of being able to be content in that situation was devastating to my life in a very personal sense as well as within my family. Trying to be complacent in that situation led me to doing things to keep me entertained which mainly attributed to spending valuable time & resources like a rapper at a strip club throwing hundos in the air. This experience with complacency nearly cost me my marriage and cost me the joy of being myself as a creative being.
What's the issue with complacency?
Well this is simple enough.... you become stuck as if you are a vehicle with a locked transmission. No moving forward and no moving back. Well what's the problem if you aren't getting any worse??? I'll tell you what. You are wasting time! Not to be cliche but we only have a certain amount of time above the soil line on this earth so every moment you spend above it counts! That hour and a half a day you spend on your phone scrolling instead of doing something you've always wanted? That counted, that 4 day window you sat on the couch to binge watch tv shows while knowing you were ignoring work towards a goal... yeah that counted. When you add it all up and you're on your deathbed how much of that time are you going to be happy with wasting?? I think about Angie Hazel. One of the most beautiful women you'd ever see. Smart, sweet, and a positive influence in life.... She died last year at 25 from cancer. Or Bryce Anglin, 20 year old college baseball player with a vibrant personality and bright future. Dead at 20 with testicular cancer. You only have limited time on earth. So don't be complacent if you're unhappy. Go out and make things happen. Don't swipe your life away. It's disrespectful to those called home before their time!
