Who has issues with letting all of the delicious summer BBQ foods and events throw them off track with where they want to be? Do you skip friend or family events like these simply because you don’t want to deal with the temptation of chips, salsa, hummus, pretzels, etc? Here’s a couple of tips to make your summer BBQ events delicious AND constructive.
1. Instead of potato or tortilla chips use pretzel chips. Some of these come in delicious flavors like Honey Dijon, Buffalo Ranch, or just plain original. Use these to dip and enjoy the event. Pretzel chips typically have 1 gram of fat or less compared to a tortilla or potato chip containing 8 grams of fat per serving.
2. Replace your sour cream dips with a variety of salsas. You still get a delicious treat but at a much lower calorie cost than traditional dips.
3. If you like a lower carb approach break out the celery sticks, baby carrots, and sliced cucumbers to dip. Some dips that are great with these include fat free ranch dressing, fat free French dressing, or my personal favorite fat free Italian!
4. Cut up that watermelon! Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer day and at a BBQ than some chunked up watermelon. You can indulge on this and really do minimal damage to any diet plan (as long as you aren’t 6 weeks out from a physique contest). You can literally eat an entire watermelon and it will cost you something like 400 calories.
5. Skip the beer or select a lower calorie option like miller 64 or bud select 55. At half the calories of a regular light beer you can essentially “double the fun.” If you’d prefer to stay away from alcohol (best choice) then I prefer to allow myself to drink as many 0 calorie soda’s or drinks during that event in order to curb the cravings for a “drink.”
